At the Louise Batz Patient Safety Foundation, we understand the devastating impact that medical errors can have on patients and their families and we are committed to providing resources to help patients and caregivers navigate their healthcare journey.

We believe that changing the system and supporting patients starts with education. That’s why we offer an ever-expanding list of resources and tools to help caregivers, patients and medical providers better understand and address the underlying issues associated with preventable medical errors. To work toward opportunities to give patients the tools they need to be more informed members of their care team, we have developed a series of patient safety guides to support their healthcare experience.

Guides

Our hope is that you and your family can use this guide in order to improve the quality of your loved one’s hospital stay. We hope that by using the guide, you will be better equipped to aid the care team in the reduction of adverse events.

Adult Guide

Upon receiving news of an impending operation or medical procedure, compile a list of questions and apprehensions to help navigate through the process. These resources will be instrumental in pre-operation meetings, while in the hospital, after being discharged, and for check-up visits. Additionally, consider incorporating personal questions addressing emotions and worries, and consult the Batz Guide for Bedside Advocacy for assistance.

Pediatric Guide

Filled with places to store records and information, coloring sheets, and questions to ask providers, our pediatric Batz Guide is intended to make hospital stays as safe and stress-free as possible while providing families with an opportunity to engage and discuss medical care with their children.

Pediatric NICU Guide

The Batz NICU Guide was born out of the need to provide special guidance to families of newborns. Giving birth is one of the most amazing experiences in a parent’s life, but when their baby is placed in the NICU, it quickly becomes overwhelming. This book is a tool to help parents and caregivers organize their baby’s healthcare information and can be used to help make the NICU stay as safe as possible.

You and Your Health Education and Advocacy Guides for Adults

The goal of this venture is to empower Head Start families to assume a dynamic role in their own health through elevating and broadening the quality of health-related services supplied by Family Support Workers (FSWs).

Community Health Guide

This guide aims to empower patients and their families by providing them
with the necessary tools to ask important questions and keep track of information
during their visits to the primary care physician. Developed in collaboration with Head Start and UT Health, this guide serves as a resource to assist families in taking an active role in managing their children's healthcare.
